How To Give A Compliment

You must of heard the advise somewhere, that to build rapport with someone and make them feel good give them a compliment.

The problem that I see, and maybe you have found this, is that a compliment can either come across as just trying too hard, it doesn’t feel genuine or it leaves a kind of awkward silence; so what do you need to do?

Good Compliments.

Giving a good compliment isn't that hard, and it can work wonders when it comes to building rapport, whether at work, networking or on a personal basis.

A simple compliment will leave your customers and clients feeling amazing, it will hit them up with a shot of dopamine and have them coming back for more.

The art of giving a compliment is a social skill that once you learn will serve you well for the rest of your life.

The Compliment Formula.

Follow this formula in the order it is written and you can be sure you will always give the best compliments.

Rule #1

Be genuine, don't just say something for the sake of it, doing this will make you come across as insincere. The awesome side effect of finding something to compliment about, is you get sent on a mission to look for the good in people.

Rule #2

So you have something genuine to compliment someone on, now, deliver the compliment,

"hey Aran, I love what you did with the gala dinner invites"

Rule #3

Next you need to immediately follow up with a reason for the compliment,

"hey Aran, I love what you did with the gala dinner invites, the artwork looks amazing and it really shows that its going to be a fun night"

Rule #4

Close off the compliment by asking an open question, related to the compliment,

"hey Aran, I love what you did with the gala dinner invites, the artwork looks amazing and it really shows that its going to be a fun night, where did you learn graphic design so well?"

Conclusion.

By complementing this way, you are delivering the compliment in a way that comes across as genuine because you are actually giving a reason, and you are avoiding an awkward moment of 'someone not knowing how to accept the compliment', because you are asking a question and giving them a way to respond.

Now we have solved the awkward compliment problem, let me know what you would like me to cover in a future video, is there a social skill you struggle with or are unsure of?
